The Need

A legend such as the story of John Henry needs to be celebrated. Children in today's culture should understand the sacrifices made by working class Americans that allowed our country to grow and flourish. Americans and all of its successes and advancements were built by everyday hero's like John Henry. In West Virginia, there are too few celebrations of the working-class and its African-American component. The John Henry Historical Park will educate people about these crucial elements of our regional and national heritage.

In addition, the John Henry Historical Park will provide a much needed recreational venue for the small rural community of Talcott. By providing a place with recreational amenities such as shelters, walking trails and an amphitheater, the park will provide opportunities for family picnics, reunions, birthday parties and celebrations.
